BENEFICIAL ACTIVITIES

As a participant in the University of Utah’s Undergraduate Research Program, in the summer and fall semesters of 2013, I identified the economically powerless segments of the U.S. population. The objective of my research was to identify the effected parties and the obstacles that typically prevent entrepreneurs from launching new enterprises. This was accomplished by conducting secondary research on data that was gathered and maintained by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), the Small Business Administration (SBA), and several other sources.  After analyzing this important information, the effected group and the challenges they face were identified.  A system was developed to help the entrepreneurs in this segment to work past these otherwise apparent insurmountable challenges.  The data gathered during this research program was invaluable in the analysis of my big problem question, and the development of what I believe will be an effective solution to part of the problem.

For most of us, it is difficult to start a business.  My solution to this lifelong problem was to build the website, “www.GoStartABiz.com.”  After researching the challenges associated with creating a new business, I’ve believe that this new system will be effective and cost efficient for all parties involved.  The development of this web based platform will reach anyone, anywhere in the world if they have access to a computer and the Internet.  For the many that desire a future as a business owner, they will find much of what the start-up process requires contained in this website.  The information on this site will simplify the business startup process, and reduce their business start-up cost. Through this system, the entrepreneurs will have free access to the resources and guidance needed to start their new enterprises.  With proper planning, it can also help reduce the number of failed attempts, and boost the local and national economies as a direct consequence.  There is NO Membership Fee, and members have full access to a host of free services and resources. However, if any member runs into difficulty completing any of the functions required to start their new business, GoStartABiz.com staff will be available to provide assistance where ever they need it for a small fee to cover any material or administrative cost.  Otherwise, the information is FREE.

As I travel the streets of Salt Lake City, I encounter a panhandling homeless person on practically every street corner. Many of us view these individuals as the lowest of the low, and dismiss them as nothing more than simple bums.  Some of that may actually be true, but I think that given other alternatives, these very same people would be productive, tax paying members of society.  I say this because I was homeless myself at one time, and I was the furthest thing from a bum that a person could possibly be. I was a decorated military veteran, an ex-firefighter, ex-business owner, Father, a patriotic citizen with “Zero criminal history,” a “Spotless Driving Record,” and forever a proud American.  I had simply fallen victim to an ugly divorce, a severe economic collapse, and ultimate business failure all at the same time.  If it can happen to me it can happen to anyone. Helping the ones that want to be helped is not only good for them; it’s also good for our society and economy.

1: Create

The University of Utah is a world class institution that leads the nation in the development of new technology startups.  Some of the tools used to create an environment that facilitates creative thinking are:  The Innovation Scholar Program, The Undergraduate Research Program, and competitions like TechTitans, Opportunity Quests, Utah Entrepreneur Challenge,  Bench-2-Bedside competitions and others.

2: Do

Anyone with a desire to improve their own standard of living, or to be a benefit to the broader society, can find their way forward by participating in any of the outstanding programs available at the University of Utah.  I entered the TechTitan competition by submitting a product idea called The Razor Jet.  That product idea won the award of GreenTitan, for its water saving, and environmentally beneficial characteristics.  It is currently Patent Pending.  Through research, I learned that Utah is the 2nd driest state in the country, behind Nevada, which drove home the reality that we just don't have the water to waste.  Once completed, the Razor Jet will conserve billions of gallons of water.  Thanks to the students and staff of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute for putting on these important competitions.  They make them welcoming, fun, educational, and in some cases a springboard to success.

3: Impact

These programs and competitions provide a forum for innovative students and faculty members to explore the feasibility of their ideas, test and prove their concepts, win prize money, technical assistance, and launch new companies.  Some of the winners of the competitions have gone on to start new enterprises, which have created jobs in the community, improved the standard of living for many, and created a Micro, as well as a Macro economic impact.
