BENEFITS OF MY COURSES

As an entrepreneur for the past 25 years, I have personally experienced the challenges that business owners and operators face on a daily basis.  One of many things I’ve learned over the years is that you must have a relatively high degree of proficiency in managing a business by its financial statements.  In Accounting 2600 (Managerial Accounting), and Accounting 3600 (Financial Accounting), I have learned important principles and procedures for creating and analyzing financial statements.  Additionally, I have gained invaluable insight into many global economies and geographies that could impact American businesses and their stockholders.  These skills have better prepared me to assist others in the development of their own enterprises, and to help them prepare the financial statements required to secure institutional funding for their new or expanding concerns. These classes have enhanced my skills in the methods of managerial and financial accounting, which is an important resource in advancing their business pursuits.

These two critically important classes that I've taken at the University of Utah have made me a more effective entrepreneur.   Accounting in general is an information system for collecting data, processing that data, and creating reports to measure business activities that will be communicated to decision makers.  In Accounting 2600 (Managerial Accounting) I learned to prepare budgets, forecasts, and projections that would be utilized by decision makers within the organization.  Accounting 3600 (Financial Accounting) taught me to prepare relevant information on financial statements and reports which will be used by concerned parties outside of the organization, such as, investors, creditors, governmental agencies, and the public.   These skills are essential for any entrepreneur starting or maintaining a business enterprise.  This information will also be an integral part of a solution to my big problem question.

3142 Global Economy & World Geography helped me to learn more about the growing integration of economies and societies. This information provides valuable insight into the patterns of economic and business activities of people in emerging markets.  It will provide helpful tools for new companies to evaluate the pros and cons of doing business abroad. In this class, I learned to evaluate issues that are related to populations, agriculture, development, migration, and urbanization. During my lifetime, I have had the opportunities to live and work in some of the largest cities in America, with some of the most diverse populations you’ll find anywhere on Earth. In these populations I have found equally as many cultures that are rich with entrepreneurial spirit. If networked properly, I am confident that many of these human resources in the communities around America can be valuable assets to those that are desirous of establishing new business enterprises.
